It's sad, but it looks like it's true. Christopher Null reports in this article that 1 in 3 laptops die in their first three years of life. While that may be a decent batting average if you're not Joe Mauer, that's absolutely horrid for those of us who like to buy equipment and use it for as long as possible.
While these stats may be somewhat supported by the fact that consumers are trending towards affordable laptops (read: "affordable laptops" == cheap parts == shorter lifespan to failure), it is reasonable to assume that people just plain aren't taking care of their equipment as they should be.
