The University of Minnesota Extension Beef Team will host the annual Minnesota Cattle Feeder Days program at five locations in southern Minnesota Dec. 6-9, 2010. The program will take place in:
* Lamberton on Dec. 9 at 9:30 a.m. at the Southwest Research and
Outreach Center
Topics for this year's program will include "Corn trait and kernel effects
on feedlot performance" by Fred Owens of Pioneer Hi-bred International.
Owens is a world-renowned ruminant nutritionist and industry expert in
topics related to feedlot nutrition and management. He will discuss how
kernel traits can affect feedlot performance, and will review research data
related to discovering the best types of corn for feeding cattle.
Mark Corrigan from Lallemand Animal Nutrition will speak about feeding and
management programs for natural cattle. This topic has gained attention in
recent years as feedlot producers look for alternative ways to maximize
feedlot profits. Corrigan will talk about the differences between
conventional and natural feeding programs, and will present recommendations
to assist in developing a successful natural feeding program.
Quality nutrition and care of receiving cattle is a key element of any
successful feedlot enterprise, and this topic will be covered in two parts
on this year's program. First, Ben Holland from South Dakota State
University will present information and recommendations on nutrition
programs for receiving cattle. Holland has worked extensively in this
subject area across a variety of climates, feedlot types and cattle types.
Holland's topic will be followed by a panel on veterinary strategies for
receiving cattle. This panel will be led by Alfredo DiCostanzo of the
Extension Beef Team and will feature insights from beef cattle veterinarians
on what should be included in an effective receiving program.
Along with these topics, Grant Crawford from the Extension Beef Team will
provide an update of Extension programming and feedlot research projects.
There will also be time set aside at the meetings for discussion with the
speakers, industry representatives and attendees.
Registration for this year's program is $35 per person, and $20 for each
additional person from the same farm or family. The registration fee
includes a meal and all educational materials. Pre-registration is
encouraged by contacting Grant Crawford at (320) 234-0441 or
